Olivia Colman, the acclaimed British actress known for her roles in The Crown and The Favourite, has publicly praised Sri Lankan cuisine, calling it the “best food” she’s ever tasted. In an interview with Interview Magazine alongside her co-star Benedict Cumberbatch to promote their film The Roses, Colman shared her enthusiasm for the vibrant and flavorful dishes she enjoyed during a holiday in Sri Lanka. Her glowing endorsement highlights the island nation’s rich culinary tradition, which is celebrated for its bold use of spices, fresh ingredients, and diverse influences.

Sri Lankan cuisine is a fusion of flavors, blending indigenous ingredients with influences from Indian, Dutch, Portuguese, and Malay culinary traditions. Staples like rice and curry, often served with an array of side dishes, showcase the island’s love for aromatic spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves, alongside fiery chilies and creamy coconut milk. Popular dishes include kottu roti, a stir-fry of chopped flatbread with vegetables and meat, and hoppers, crispy, bowl-shaped pancakes made from fermented rice flour. Seafood, tropical fruits, and lentils also play a starring role, creating a vibrant and varied food culture.

Colman’s praise underscores Sri Lanka’s growing reputation as a food destination. Her comments have sparked interest among food enthusiasts, shining a spotlight on the island’s unique gastronomy.
